Girdley, in his first year at Capistrano Valley Christian, is also in his first year as a softball coach. Girdley was a baseball and football coach in Washington. “It’s a little different coaching girls instead of boys, but I’ve got a great group to work with,” Girdley said. “We’re a young team with a real positive attitude, and that makes coaching fun no matter who you’re working with.” The Eagles don’t have a lot of depth, especially in pitching, but Girdley thinks Moine has the potential to be Capistrano Valley Christian’s No. 1 pitcher. “She hasn’t pitched much, but she’s a good prospect because of her arm strength and control,” he said. Although the Eagle pitching staff is young, Martinek returns at catcher to stabilize the battery. Martinek is expected to be the Eagles’ top power hitter. The infield is experienced with Davenport and Rabun back, but Scholten and newcomers Fielstra and Etheridge could force a number of lineup adjustments. Fielstra is the fastest Eagle, and will have a shot at the No. 2 pitching job. Girdley says Etheridge and Scholten are good athletes who will probably find a home somewhere in the lineup. “We’ve got good team speed and athletic ability,” Girdley said. “We just need to develop some depth.”
