HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Simi Valley’s Leppard Staves Off La Mirada

Aaron Whitley was three for four and Trevor Leppard earned his first save to lead Simi Valley High past La Mirada, 4-3, in an El Segundo tournament game pitting two of the top 10 baseball teams in the state as ranked by Cal-Hi Sports.

Simi Valley, ranked No. 6, improved to 2-0. La Mirada, ranked No. 9, is 1-1.

Leppard, a junior right-hander, retired all five batters he faced and struck out three. He relieved junior right-hander Bill Treadway (1-0) with Simi Valley nursing a 4-3 lead and runners at first and second in the sixth inning. Leppard ended the inning on a groundout and strikeout.

Crespi 10, Torrance 6--John Peck scored when Brodie VanWagenen grounded to third to give the Celts a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning of an El Segundo tournament game at Torrance.

Jim Horacek belted a three-run home run in the first and reliever Phillip Aghajanian (2-0) struck out seven through 2 2/3 innings for Crespi (2-0).

Edison 9, Westlake 3--Keith Wilson was two for three for host Westlake (1-1) in an El Segundo tournament game. Westlake committed five errors and Edison scored five unearned runs.

Diamond Bar 8, Newbury Park 0--Robert Fick and David Lamb each had two hits for Newbury Park (1-1), which was limited to five hits in a Loara tournament game at Anaheim.

Diamond Bar (2-0) is ranked No. 4 in the Southern Section 5-A Division poll.

Poly 8, El Camino Real 3--Jesus Perez had two doubles and a triple to lead Poly (1-1) in a second-round game of the San Fernando tournament.

With Poly holding a 3-0 lead, Orlando Chavarria hit a three-run homer with two out in the fourth to break the game open.

Randy Wolf had two hits and Dan Cey drove in all three runs for El Camino Real (1-1).

Grant 11, Birmingham 3--Justin Howard went three for five and scored twice to lead the Lancers (1-1) past Birmingham (0-2) in a San Fernando tournament game.

Jose Velazquez, Petur Georgesson and Jason Litt each had two hits for Grant.

San Fernando 9, Franklin 1--Raymond Rivera and Tony Cabrera combined to pitch a one-hitter as the host Tigers (2-0) beat Franklin (0-2) in a San Fernando tournament game.

Luis Rodriguez went three for four with a triple, a double and two runs scored for San Fernando.

Reseda 13, North Hollywood 2--Reseda sophomore Carlos Nunez had a bases-loaded triple and a grand slam in a 12-run third inning of the Van Nuys tournament game at Reseda. Larry Trammel went three for three with two runs batted in for the Regents (1-0).

Buckley 2, Oakwood 1--Jason Kapler’s single scored Steve Moon with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and Richard Hafkin and Taryll Jackson combined for a no-hitter in a nonleague game at Buckley. Jackson (1-0), who relieved Hafkin in the fourth, struck out 11 of 12 batters.

Agoura 7, Calabasas 6--An errant pickoff attempt allowed Brent Finch to score the winning run in the sixth inning of a nonleague game. Ed Gillis went two for two with three runs batted in for Agoura (1-2).

Quartz Hill 17, St. Genevieve 2--Bryan Willey went two for three with four RBIs and scored twice as the Rebels (1-0) scored all their runs in the first two innings of a nonleague game.

Hoover 15, Blair 4--Nathan Dishington had two triples and five RBIs, and Gabriel Enriquez had two singles and two RBIs to lead Hoover (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Fillmore 4, St. Bonaventure 2--Junior right-hander Jaime Duran struck out 10 and walked two for Fillmore (1-0), which had only four hits but scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning of a nonleague game at Fillmore.

Oak Park 4, Santa Clara 3 (10 innings)--Eric Pryor doubled home Damin Sterling in the bottom of the ninth of a nonleague opener.

Pryor, who pitched the final three innings, picked up the victory. He also had a two-run double in the fifth.

SOFTBALL

Camarillo 1, La Reina 0--Junior right-hander Laura Richardson, the 1991 Southern Section 5-A player of the year, threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 to beat La Reina (1-2) in a nonleague game.

Teresa Peraza’s sacrifice fly scored Miki Mangan in the fifth inning off Michelle St. Pierre, the 1991 1-A player of the year. St. Pierre allowed only two hits.

Moorpark 28, Village Christian 0--Kara Shea was three for three and pitched a two-hitter for host Moorpark (2-0) in a nonleague game. Shea (2-0) struck out 10.

Crescenta Valley 7, Rosemead 0--Stacy Atwood (1-0) recorded 10 strikeouts and reliever Danielle Robertshaw added five in a nonleague game at Rosemead.

Louisville 9, Harvard-Westlake 5--Ashley Wire had two of Louisville’s four hits and collected three RBIs in a nonleague opener.

Saugus 12, Ganesha 0--Adria Lombardi (2-0) and Kerry Coudry combined to pitch a one-hitter for Saugus (2-0) in the second round of the Chino tournament. Saugus’ Corinne Ochoa was three for three.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame d. Saugus, 15-7, 15-11, 15-13--Tom Stillwell had 13 kills, Tim Lennon had 11, and Morgan Hay added 10 kills and five aces for Notre Dame (3-0) in a nonleague match at Saugus.
