PREP BASKETBALL STATE REGIONAL PLAYOFFS : Glendora (32-0) Steals Past Redwood of Visalia, 50-49

Glendora High’s Craig Delgado intercepted a pass with six seconds left to preserve a 50-49 victory over Redwood of Visalia Tuesday night in a Southern Regional Division II boys’ basketball first-round game at Cal Poly Pomona.

Brandon Lee, who scored 18 points, made a short jump shot with just over a minute left to give Glendora its margin of victory.

The Tartans (32-0), who defeated Artesia to win the Southern Section Division II-AA title on Saturday, made only 20 of 45 shots (44.4%) and never led by more than four points.

Glendora led, 32-28, at halftime and, 42-39, entering the fourth quarter.

Cameron Murray (seven assists) added 17 points, including three three-point baskets, and Adam Jacobsen had 11 for Glendora.

Adam Visilovich had 17 points for Redwood (20-9).

Inglewood Morningside 96, Fresno Central 55--The host Monarchs led from the start and opened a 54-24 halftime lead in a Division III game.

Dominic Ellis scored 16 points and Stais Boseman had 14 for Morningside (22-6), the Southern Section Division III-AA champion. Pauliasi Taulava also added nine rebounds.

Central finished 21-9.

La Canada 58, La Jolla 36--Richard Mandeville, a 6-11 junior, had 28 points and 10 rebounds, and Jimmy Evans added 16 points and 13 rebounds for La Canada (27-2) in a Division III game at La Canada.

The Spartans, Southern Section Division III-A champions who have won 21 games in a row, broke a 9-9 tie with six unanswered points to open the second quarter and never trailed again.

Gardena Serra 86, Fresno Washington 67--Arthur Tate had 21 points to lead the Cavaliers to victory at Fresno.

Serra led, 58-54, after three quarters before breaking away.

La Canada Ribet Academy 67, Strathmore 53--The Fighting Frogs, defending State Division V champions, overcame a sluggish start to win at La Canada.

Senior guard Lydell Hill scored 25 points for Ribet Academy (21-6).

Campbell Hall 78, Solana Beach Santa Fe 55--Austin McKellar scored 21 points and C.J. Thompkins added 19 for Campbell Hall (19-10) in a Division V game at Harvard-Westlake High.

GIRLS

Lynwood High overcame a record-setting performance by Los Angeles Washington forward Charisse Sampson to post a 53-43 victory in a Division I Southern Regional first-round game at Washington.

Sampson, a 5-foot-11 senior, grabbed 17 rebounds to finish her career with 1,706. That moves her into second place on the state rebounding list, one ahead of Lisa Leslie of Morningside. Terri Mann of San Diego Point Loma holds the record of 2,256 set from 1984-87.

Sampson also scored a game-high 29 points to finish her career with 2,285 points, a City Section record.

But the City 4-A champions could not keep up with Lynwood (27-2), which pulled away in the third quarter by building a 43-23 lead. Center Janet Davis led Lynwood with 14 points.

Thousand Oaks 54, Clovis West 32--Although senior guard Michelle Palmisano scored a season-low 12 points, the Lancers used their defensive pressure to win a Division I game in Fresno.

Marion Jones had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Sasha Scardino added 13 points for Thousand Oaks (30-1). Palmisano has been slowed by leg injuries.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 52, Sanger 51--Mirlen Martinez hit an eight-foot baseline jump shot with two seconds remaining to lift Bishop Montgomery to a Division II victory at Sanger.

Bishop Montgomery (25-7) led, 28-19, at halftime, but was up by only 36-35 after three quarters.

Brea-Olinda 96, Santee West Hills 16--Brea-Olinda (28-2) started the game with a 10-0 run and led, 42-6, at halftime to easily win its Division III game at Brea.

Nicole Erickson had 23 points and nine assists, and Jody Anton had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Brea-Olinda.

Morro Bay 41, Santa Maria St. Joseph 28--Guard Sara Pierce scored a game-high 21 points to lead Morro Bay (24-4) to a Division IV victory at Morro Bay.
