The Sentinels can’t go anywhere but up after winning just one game last year during the season and going winless in league. The victory came against Corona del Mar. Barrows won’t promise anything, but he says the Sentinels are improved this year. The team is bolstered by freshman Rincon, who has been pitching since she was 6. Freshman Amaro is also expected to make an impact at catcher. Barrows will count on five returning starters, including all-league player Cervantes. Clark, Onofre, Carlson and Cervantes make up Magnolia’s infield. “In all my years of coaching, this is the best infield I’ve ever had,” Barrows said. “Defensively, they are tough.” Barrows says pitching is no longer the team’s weakness. He says instead the Sentinels need to improve their hitting. “Our biggest weakness is right field,” he said. “And left field could use some strength.” Barrows also said he wishes the team had more speed. “I think you always wish you could have more speed.” Toward that end, Barrows is counting on Amaro. “She’s like a cat behind the plate and she’s a fast baserunner.”
