A mother and her 6-month-old daughter were hospitalized for smoke inhalation Thursday after a fire broke out in their apartment, fire officials said.

The apartment fire at 2245 W. Vancouver Drive began about 5:30 p.m. and caused an estimated $85,000 in damage, Battalion Chief Benny Ramirez said.

During the fire, a passerby, Roger Miszczak, ran into the apartment and grabbed the 6-month-old girl, fire officials said.
