The City Council has agreed to give the financially strapped Rosemead Youth Assn. $7,000 to cover a deficit that was threatening to curtail the group’s baseball program.

About 40 children from Rosemead and surrounding communities participate in the “pony league” baseball program for ages 5 to 16 each year.

Rosemead Youth--Due to an error in transcription, The Times reported incorrectly Sunday the number of children who participate in the Rosemead Youth Assn. pony league baseball program, which was given $7,000 by the City Council to help pull it out of debt. About 400 children from Rosemead and surrounding communities participate.

Association secretary Barbara Bloomfield said the group normally supports itself through private fund-raisers and $55 to $65 membership fees. But the group does not turn away children who can’t afford the fees, and donations are down because of the recession, Bloomfield said.

The debt, which is owed to a sporting goods store, would have severely restricted the group’s ability to buy uniforms and equipment, she said.
