COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Five Home Runs Help Titans Dominate New Mexico State

Dante Powell hit two home runs, and Cal State Fullerton had five in a 16-6 victory over New Mexico State in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday in Las Cruces.

It was the 11th time in 24 games that Fullerton (18-6, 3-1 in conference) scored 10 or more runs.

Craig Fairbrother had three hits including a home run (his third) and five runs batted in, including a a three-run double in the first inning as the Titans opened a 4-0 lead. Fairbrother had a three home runs and 10 RBIs in his last two conference games.

Fullerton scored in every inning except the fourth.

Powell’s home runs were his first two. Jim Betzsold hit his third home run and Chris Powell his first for Fullerton.

Dan Naulty (5-1) pitched the first five innings for the victory, and Marcus Nelson pitched the final four for his first save.

New Mexico State (8-18, 0-4) plays host to the Titans today and Sunday at noon to complete the three-game series.

In a nonconference game:

Christ College Irvine 8, Puget Sound 5--Mike Adams broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a double, and Barrett Bernard scored on a bases-loaded walk to Armando Diaz to Christ College Irvine (15-7) a 3-1 lead. Lonny Zimmerman broke the game open with a three-run double in the sixth, driving in Rob Meinhardt, Rodney Nelson and Diaz to make it 6-1.

In the NCAA wrestling championships in Oklahoma City:

Titan wrestler eliminated--Senior Lyndon Campbell (134 pounds) lost in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Tom Brands of Iowa, 16-7, and then was eliminated in the consolation bracket by Arizona State’s Marco Sanchez, 5-3. Campbell finished 26-8.
