Al Unser Jr. took the pole position for the season’s first Indy car race, at Surfers Paradise, Australia, moving his Galmer-Chevrolet past defending Indy-car champion Michael Andretti with a lap of 101.900 m.p.h. over a 2.793-mile street circuit.
