Alexander Volkov said he had plenty of winning baskets when he played in the former Soviet Union, so he felt right at home Monday night at Atlanta when he tipped in an airball at the buzzer to give the Atlanta Hawks a 126-125 victory in overtime over the Golden State Warriors.

“I felt like I was all alone in the gym and I put it in,” Volkov said. “It’s just a good feeling. I used to score a lot of winning baskets in the Soviet Union.”

The victory also snapped a five-game losing streak in overtime games this season for the Hawks.

Tim Hardaway, who joined with Chris Mullin to score 25 points apiece for the Warriors, gave Golden State a 125-124 lead on a bank shot with six seconds left.

With two seconds to go, Rumeal Robinson’s 22-foot shot missed everything, but Duane Ferrell tipped the ball to Volkov, who got off the game-winner in time.

Stacey Augmon had a personal-best 32 points for Atlanta, including the NBA’s six-millionth point on a layup in the second quarter.

Philadelphia 105, San Antonio 92--Johnny Dawkins scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter at Philadelphia as the 76ers snapped a five-game losing streak.

The 76ers, who fell into 11th place in the Eastern Conference with the losing streak, pulled into a ninth-place tie with Miami with the victory.

The Spurs, who had won six of their seven previous games, fell three games behind first-place Utah in the Midwest Division, despite 30 points and 15 rebounds by David Robinson.

New Jersey 123, Charlotte 120--Derrick Coleman had 37 points and 12 rebounds and Tate George had six free throws during a 10-0 run at East Rutherford, N.J., that carried the Nets to their 14th home victory in 16 games.

The victory also boosted them half a game ahead of Miami in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill scored 24 points apiece and Dell Curry had 22 for the Hornets, who won 10 of their previous 13 games.

Denver 100, Minnesota 95--Just when it appeared as if the Timberwolves were going to end their 12-game losing streak, the Nuggets rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter at Minneapolis to extend the streak to 13.

Reggie Williams scored 19 points for Denver, including six free throws in the final two minutes.
