HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Serra Comes Back in Last Inning to Defeat University City

Milo Rodriguez had three hits, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Serra to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over University City on Wednesday.

After University City went ahead 5-4 in the top of the seventh on Peter Uriarle’s two-run homer, Serra rallied.

Ricky Escamilla singled, Justin Wible walked and Jimmy White sacrificed the the runners to second and third. After another out, Rodriguez delivered a single up the middle.

In other nonleague games:

Poway 3, Rancho Bernardo 2--Poway scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to beat its cross-town rival. With one out in the last inning, Steve Boros was hit by a pitch, David Kelch doubled to place runners at second and third, and, after an intentional walk, Jeff Pattison singled to left, driving in Boros.

Pattison also drove in the game’s first run with a single in the first inning.

Rancho Buena Vista 2, El Capitan 1--No. 10 El Capitan scored only one run, but it was almost enough.

Instead, El Capitan (3-4) committed two throwing errors in the top of the sixth and allowed two unearned runs for its second loss in as many days.

With one out and Matt Pallotto on second, RBV’s Grady Griffith singled to right, moving Pallotto to third. Pallotto continued home when the right fielder missed the cut-off man.

Griffith came around to score on a “Little League” home run when catcher Matt McFarlane, who ran down the errant throw, overthrew the third baseman.

Both starters went the distance. Jeff McCauley struck out four and walked three for the victory for RBV (4-2), and Matt La Chappa walked two and struck out four in the loss.

San Dieguito 4, Hood River (Ore.) 3--The Mustangs won the game, but lost shortstop Scott Wilson, a .368 hitter, to a broken arm for four to six weeks. On a steal attempt by Hood River, Wilson collided with the baserunner in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Andy Guenther singled, Hood River walked the next two batters intentionally, then Scott Sanders, who replaced Wilson, laid down a bunt that made for a successful squeeze play for San Dieguito (3-5-1).

Nonleague

San Pasqual 6, Orange Glen 0--Junior pitcher Erin Combe earned her second victory. She was supported by Anny Dini (three for three, two RBIs) and Cristina Marquez (two for four, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run).
