Symposium for Foreign-Film Oscar Nominees Set Saturday

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hold its annual foreign-language film award nominees symposium Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in its headquarters, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

The symposium, which honors the five films nominated for Oscars in the foreign-language film category, is open to the public free of charge.

Participants include Jan Sverak, director of Czechoslovakia’s “The Elementary School”; Zhang Yimou, director of Hong Kong’s “Raise the Red Lantern”; Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, director/co-writer of Iceland’s “Children of Nature”; Gabriel Salvatores, director of Italy’s “Mediterraneo”; and Sven Nykvist, director-cinematographer of Sweden’s “The Ox.”

Moderating the panel will be director George Schaefer.
