HUNTINGTON BEACH : Pier Run Promoters Expecting a Profit

Share

The fourth annual Huntington Beach Pier Run, which helps raise money for the pier reconstruction, has been scheduled for June 14.

The city has paid $40,000 for the organization and promotion of the 10-kilometer run, but officials are hoping to recover some of that money by garnering sponsorships.

Last year, the pier run raised only $2,000 for the pier after expenses, and the year before, the event lost money for the city.

Promoters are more confident this year, however, because they say they have tentatively lined up at least three corporate sponsors.

Thomas Bagshaw, president of the PIER group--a private pier fund-raising organization that initiated the Pier Run--said he believes this year’s event may raise between $15,000 and $25,000 for the project.

Even without sponsorships, city officials predict that the run will raise about $6,000.

The money for the pier is badly needed. The city is still about $2 million shy of paying for the $12.4-million project.
