Marni Matsumoto, a member of the women’s tennis team at Cal State Fullerton, was listed in critical condition Saturday after she lost control of her car on the Riverside Freeway near the Brookhurst Street off-ramp, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The CHP said the accident occurred at 6:55 a.m. as Matsumoto was driving east about 60 m.p.h. After she lost control, officers said, her car “apparently struck a raised concrete abutment,” then became airborne.

The 1980 Honda Accord landed on the freeway on-ramp at Brookhurst, skidded sideways and slammed into a tree, according to the CHP.

The 20-year-old sophomore from La Palma was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with major injuries, officers said. She is in the intensive-care unit.

Bill Reynolds, her coach, said that at the time of the accident, Matsumoto was going to an 8 a.m. tennis match that pitted Cal State Fullerton against the University of Texas-El Paso.
