Members of the team will be honored during a breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos.

The all-star team was chosen primarily on the basis of ballots cast by area coaches. Here is the Southeast girls team:

Faye Hagan, Glenn--The 5-foot-8 senior edged out Amy Hughlett of Cerritos in balloting for the top player. In three seasons she scored 1,486 points and had 1,002 rebounds. “She has instincts for the ball,” Coach Richard Drake said. “Her defense was her best offense.” She plans to attend Cal State Fullerton.

Amy Hughlett, Cerritos--The 6-foot-3 senior center/forward averaged 12.3 points and 10.6 rebounds for the 20-9 Dons. In the opening round of the I-A playoffs, she scored 18 points and added 18 rebounds in a 57-50 victory over Huntington Beach. “Rebounding was her best asset,” Coach Ann Dena Sjoerdsma said. Hughlett was a first-team all-San Gabriel Valley League choice. She will attend UC Santa Barbara next year.

Allahmi Basheer, Cerritos--A 6-foot-2 senior center who led her team in field goal shooting percentage (51%), scoring (13.1) and blocked shots (82). She scored 18 points in the playoff win over Huntington Beach and has signed to play at UC Irvine.

Shannon Perry, Cerritos--The youngest player on the team. The 6-foot sophomore forward averaged 12.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. She made 66% of her free throws. “I’m sure glad she is coming back next year,” Sjoerdsma said.

Kate Larrabee, La Mirada--At 6-foot-3, she “is able to go left or right to the basket,” veteran Coach Lyle Lewinson said of the first-team all-Suburban League player. The senior averaged 18.3 points and 12.3 rebounds. She also plays volleyball.

Sherise Sandoz, Pius X--The 5-foot-9 junior was voted most valuable player of the Camino Real League for the second consecutive season. She is capable of playing any position except point guard. She averaged 21.7 points and 17.9 rebounds. “Her hustle and determination make her a great player,” Coach Bob Santisteven said.

Amira Thompson, Artesia--A four-year starter who averaged 21 points and 8 rebounds this season. The 5-foot-10 forward “has been my best player in the two years that I have been here,” Coach Nelson Herrera said.

Michelle Esparza, El Rancho--The leading scorer in the Southeast area (29.7 points) could also rebound (8.7) and assist (4.1). The 5-foot-10 senior played guard and forward. She was called “the best player in the area” by Bell Gardens Coach Lisa Gilmer.

Kristen Ebright, Whitney--The 5-foot-8 senior is a repeat all-star selection. She finished third in Southern Section career 3-point shooting with 174 successful shots. She is a good dribbler, particularly with her right hand, and brought the ball upcourt nearly every time for the Wildcats. She averaged 20 points. Ebright says she may try out for the team at UC Irvine.

Maritza Cruz, Huntington Park--The 5-foot-7 senior forward is the only City Section player on the team. She averaged 22 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. “A great all-around player,” said opposing Coach Sallie Fujii of Bell.

Coach of the year:

Eleanor Dykstra, Valley Christian--The veteran coach hung it up in 1987 after she guided the Crusaders to Southern Section and state regional titles. Two years ago, when the school’s athletic director job opened, she was coaxed out of retirement. Shortly thereafter, “The opportunity came up to also take the girls’ coaching job, and I did,” she said. After going 10-13 last season, the Crusaders were 25-5 and won the Southern Section IV-A Division title.
