HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Carlsbad Beats San Marcos in 10 Innings

Brian Byrne drove in the winning run as Carlsbad won an Avocado League baseball game against San Marcos in extra innings Wednesday.

Tied at the bottom of the 10th, Byrne’s infield hit scored Carlsbad’s Greg Jenkins, and the Lancers were on their way to the 4-3 victory at home. The other extra-inning run came off a passed ball, on which Tim Mulligan scored.

Byrne struck out four, gave up four hits and one earned run in eight innings. San Marcos’ Troy Glaus pitched seven innings and gave up one earned run.

Carlsbad improved to 5-5, 1-0. San Marcos fell to 2-6, 0-1.

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 5, San Dieguito 2--San Dieguito’s five-game winning streak came to a halt. For Torrey Pines, Chris Schweighart picked up two doubles, which drove in three runs. Mike Fouts went the distance and put the squeeze on San Dieguito’s bats, striking out nine and allowing three hits. Torrey Pines is 2-4-1, 1-0; San Dieguito dropped to 5-4, 0-1.

SOFTBALL

Avocado League

San Pasqual 7, Oceanside 0--Sophomore right-hander Erin Balogh pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks. Junior center fielder Cristina Marquez went three for four, including a triple, and drove in three runs for San Pasqual (4-2, 1-0). Oceanside is 1-3, 0-1.

VOLLEYBALL

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel d. San Dieguito, 2-15, 15-7, 15-13, 15-17, 15-9--For third-ranked Mt. Carmel, Robert Treahy had 30 kills and teammate Vince Laconico added 15. Adam Renfree contributed an impressive 57 assists for the Sundevils (5-1, 2-1).

Torrey Pines d. Poway, 15-10, 12-15, 15-6, 16-14--The top-ranked Falcons kept their league record perfect with the victory at fourth-ranked Poway. Justin Fornal (15) and Scot Pollard (14) joined forces as Torrey Pines’ kill leaders. But Charlie Kaman was the game’s kill leader. He had 22 for Poway (5-2, 2-1). The Falcons are 3-0 in league.
