After Leaving Channel 2, Lampley Gets Hired by NBC and KMPC
Jim Lampley, former Channel 2 news anchor, has been hired by NBC, where his duties will include being late-night host at the Barcelona Olympics and NFL play-by-play, and by radio station KMPC, where he will have an afternoon show in the station’s new all-sports format.
NBC’s Dick Ebersol, in making the announcement for his network at a business meeting in Universal City on Thursday, said Lampley also will have a role on Notre Dame football telecasts, although he did not specify that role.
It could be play-by-play, which would ease Dick Enberg’s workload. Enberg last season did NFL games and Notre Dame football. Bill Walsh, who worked with Enberg on both last season, has since left NBC to become Stanford’s football coach.
Lampley signed with KMPC later Thursday. He will start for the radio station when it goes to its all-sports format April 27. His regular hours will be 1:30 to 5:30 weekday afternoons, according to KMPC General Manager Bill Ward.
Lampley said he also will continue to do boxing and Wimbledon tennis for HBO.
Ebersol also announced that NBC has hired John McEnroe to replace Jimmy Connors on tennis. Connors asked to be relieved of his NBC tennis commitments.
McEnroe said this will be his last year of competitive singles tennis. He plans to play in the French Open and Wimbledon.
