THOUSAND OAKS : Man, 44, Convicted on Steroid Charges
A 44-year-old Thousand Oaks man has been convicted of defrauding the Food and Drug Administration and distributing steroid substitutes, authorities said Friday.
Lawrence Wood and Daniel Duchaine, 39, of Venice Beach, were found guilty by a federal court jury after a four-day trial in Los Angeles, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Byrne.
Wood and Duchaine conspired to illegally sell two drugs: gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and Clenbuterol, both used as substitutes for anabolic steroids, Byrne said. Both drugs are sometimes taken by athletes to improve performance, he said.
Wood, a former Rockwell research scientist, received orders through a company called Unlimited Longevity Research Inc., and referred them to Duchaine for processing, Byrne said. Duchaine, who stored the drugs in his home and at a storage locker, filled the orders, Byrne said.
Sentencing has been scheduled for June 22. Wood faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines, while Duchaine faces as much as 29 years in prison and $2.25 million in fines.
