PREP ROUNDUP : El Dorado Beats Cypress in Softball
Heather Hamer gave up nine hits as El Dorado upset Cypress, 2-1, in an Empire League softball game Tuesday at Cypress.
The Centurions (13-3, 2-1 in league), ranked third in Orange County, had baserunners in every inning. But Hamer (6-4) was able to work out of nearly every jam, allowing only a run in the sixth.
Traci Vargas (10-7, 1-2) tripled in the second inning and later scored on an error to give El Dorado a 1-0 lead. Brianna Yoshina and Andrea Murrie had back-to-back doubles in the sixth to put the Golden Hawks ahead, 2-0.
In other Empire League games:
Los Alamitos 3, Katella 2--Michelle Schneider hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run first inning for the visiting Griffins (10-4-1, 3-0).
In Arrowhead League softball:
Calvary Chapel 7, La Verne Lutheran 1--Kim Schroy struck out 14 and Jennifer Hoffman had three hits and three runs batted in for Calvary Chapel (6-6, 3-0).
In Century League softball:
El Modena 7, Canyon 4--Alexis Beckman hit a grand slam and also pitched a six-hitter for visiting El Modena (11-5, 3-0).
Foothill 9, Orange 1--Christina Mazurie had three RBIs for host Foothill (14-7, 3-0).
Villa Park 26, Santa Ana Valley 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Brandee McArthur pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 for host Villa Park (10-6, 2-1). Jenny Boroughs was four for four with four RBIs.
In Freeway league softball:
Fullerton 3, Sonora 2--The Indians (10-9, 2-1) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out throwing error.
La Habra 16, Buena Park 0--Dani Ortega struck out 14 and pitched a one-hitter for host La Habra. Sara Mallett had three hits and six RBIs, including a two-run homer for the Highlanders.
Sunny Hills 2, Troy 1 (9 innings)--Brandi Northrup drove in Nicole Smith with the winning run on an infield single to cap a two-run rally in the ninth for Sunny Hills (8-10, 3-0).
In Garden Grove League softball:
Garden Grove 3, Rancho Alamitos 2--Garden Grove (12-4-1, 5-1-1) scored three runs in the fourth inning on one hit, two walks, an error and a passed ball.
La Quinta 6, Santiago 0--Teresa Pinkerton pitched a five-hitter, striking out eight, for host La Quinta.
Pacifica 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Jennifer Surface (11-3) pitched a three-hitter, striking out 14, to record her ninth shutout of the year for the host Mariners (13-4-1, 6-1).
In Orange League softball:
Brea-Olinda 6, Magnolia 3--Gena Tuso struck out 11 and Samantha Cardenas homered for Brea-Olinda (12-4, 3-0).
Western 7, Anaheim 2--Beth Queypo hit a grand slam and Dawn Fowler allowed three hits for host Western (8-8, 3-0).
In Pacific Coast League softball:
Century 7, Costa Mesa 2--Melody Robles got the visiting Centurions (1-8, 1-2) into the victory column for the first time this season, pitching a two-hitter. She did not allow an earned run.
In Sunset League softball:
Huntington Beach 7, Edison 0--Stefanie Noffsinger pitched a two-hitter, striking out 15, and hit a solo homer for the host Oilers (7-10-1, 3-3).
Marina 14, Santa Ana 0--Julie Luft had a three-run, fifth-inning triple for the visiting Vikings (12-4, 5-1).
In Pacific Coast League baseball:
Laguna Beach 12, Costa Mesa 3--Jason Abraham went three for five with two runs scored and two RBIs and struck out eight to lead the Artists. Ian McDonald went four for four and stole four bases for Laguna Beach (5-12, 3-5).
Laguna Hills 11, Trabuco Hills 5--Jeramy Gillen had a three-run double for the visiting Hawks (10-7, 4-2) during their seven-run seventh inning.
In Sunset league baseball:
Huntington Beach 7, Edison 3--Ryan Brannon hit a three-run, third-inning home run and Bryan Feathers hit a two-run, first-inning homer for the visiting Oilers (16-3, 5-1). Ryan Belitz hit a two-run, sixth-inning homer to break up Derek Glascoe’s no-hitter.
Marina 10, Santa Ana 3--David Anderson hit a two-run double to highlight a nine-run first inning for host Marina (8-10, 3-3).
Ocean View 5, Fountain Valley 2--Rich Crowe drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double with one out in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie for the visiting Seahawks (12-6, 3-3).
In Sunset League golf:
Marina 364, Westminster 450 (18 holes)--Brian Rey shot one-under 69 for the Vikings, who broke the school’s team score record. Marina’s previous record for 18 holes was 365, shot against Westminster in 1990.
In South Coast League boys’ tennis:
Mission Viejo 12, El Toro 6--Mission Viejo (10-3, 4-1), ranked seventh in Southern Section Division 4-A, swept at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to defeat the 10th-ranked Chargers. Chris Brown swept at No. 1 singles for host El Toro (7-4, 3-2).
In South Coast League boys’ volleyball:
Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 2--Bryan Lawson had 31 kills, Aaron Garcia and Eric Feiffert 17 each and Evan Alexander 16 for the host Cougars (9-2, 4-1) in a 11-15, 15-11, 7-15, 15-8, 15-10 victory.
In Century League boys’ track and field:
El Modena 68, Santa Ana Valley 68--Santa Ana Valley ended El Modena’s four-year undefeated streak in league. Anthoni Davis won the 220- and 440-yard sprints for Santa Ana Valley (1-0-2). Gary Van Sluis won the high jump at 5 feet 8 inches and the pole vault at 14-0 for El Modena (5-0-1, 1-0-1).
