KCAL-TV Channel 9 Gets Most L.A. Area Emmy Nominations : KCAL-TV Channel 9 topped the competition for 1991 Los Angeles Area Emmy Award nominations Thursday, capturing 49

two more than KCBS Channel 2.

The two stations are competing head to head in the category of best 60-minute newscast, with KCAL represented by its 10 p.m. broadcast and KCBS by its 5 p.m. program. No other hourlong newscasts were nominated.

The category for best half-hour newscast also has only two nominees: KCBS’ 6 p.m. show and KNBC Channel 4’s 11 p.m. broadcast.

Winners of the local Emmys, which are handed out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, will be announced May 30 in ceremonies at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

A total of 242 nominations were made in 53 categories. KABC-TV Channel 7 got the third highest number, 37, followed by KTLA Channel 5 with 30, KTTV Channel 11 with 17, KCET Channel 28 and KNBC Channel 4 with 16 each and KCOP Channel 13 with 10. Eleven other stations and cable companies share the remainder.

The academy had previously announced that its annual Governors Award will be given to veteran Dodgers sportscaster Vin Scully.
