COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast Scores on Error to Beat Fullerton in Softball

Sam Lutsch doubled home Shannon Ebert and later scored on shortstop Teen McDeigh’s throwing error in the top of the ninth as Orange Coast remained atop of the Orange Empire Conference with a 2-1 softball victory Friday at Fullerton.

OCC (28-9, 16-3 in conference) holds a one-game lead over Cypress with two left.

The Hornets (28-17, 11-10) rallied in the bottom of the ninth. With two on, Dawn Salter’s double drove in Kim Fritts and sent McDeigh to third. But Salter was thrown out after rounding second too far. Sig Lo followed with a walk and stole second, but Alisha Nelson (18-6) induced Karri Johnson to fly out to center field for the final out.

In other Orange Empire Conference softball games:

Cypress 8, Rancho Santiago 7 (8 innings)--Jennifer Johnson’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth drove in the winning runs for the Chargers (34-14, 15-4). Johnson was four for five, with four RBIs.

Golden West 8, Irvine Valley 0--Marcy Rainwater went two for four with two RBIs and scored a run for Golden West (11-23, 6-13). Irvine Valley is 0-19 in conference and overall.

In the South Coast Conference men’s swimming finals:

Golden West leads--Golden West won all the events and built a 306-point lead over Long Beach after two days of the three-day competition. Alex Beaver won the 400 individual medley relay in 4 minutes, 7.17 seconds, leading Golden West’s sweep of top three positions in the race. Rustler Todd McClung won the breaststroke in 56.78.

In the South Coast Conference women’s swimming finals:

Golden West leads--Jennifer Bloomfield won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.39 and swam on Golden West’s winning 400 freestyle relay team. Golden West leads second-place El Camino, 398-308, with one day remaining.
