Toreros Struggles in WCC Golf Tournament

Loyola Marymount’s Brian Pytlewski shot a four-under 68 to tie an individual low round for West Coast Conference championship play during Monday’s second round at Torrey Pines North.
In team play, defending champion Pepperdine has a seven-stroke lead over San Francisco going into today’s final round. The University of San Diego is sixth in the eight-team field. Pepperdine shot back-to-back 290s, which tied for single-round team lows in the WCC tournament. San Francisco also shot a 290 Monday.
Defending individual champion Todd Fischer of USF (143) is tied with Steve Van Alstyne of Pepperdine for the lead. USD’s Steve Brown (153) is tied in 18th.
BASEBALL
Point Loma Nazarene wrestled a 22-2 nonconference victory from host Pomona Pitzer. Senior Rich Miller (three for four) keyed a 14-run fourth inning, first with a three-run, followed by a two-run home runs. PLNC collected 21 hits.
Junior pitcher Craig Lyons, in his first at-bats of the year, went four for six and drove in a run and freshman Brock Marsh was three for six, with a double. PLNC is 19-22-1; Pomona Pitzer fell to 11-19.
USD has signed third baseman Karl Schmidt of Illinois to a letter of intent. Schmidt, out of Oak Forest High, is a 5-foot-11, switch hitter who was a pre-season All-American and was included in Collegiate Baseball magazine’s listing of top national players.
His junior year, Schmidt was voted the outstanding third baseman and a Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. All-Star. Entering this week, he was batting .480 (12 for 25), with a home run, four doubles, one triple, had 12 RBIs, scored eight runs and stole three bases.
Schmidt is the second player to commit to the Toreros. Catcher Ryan Burkeen of Portland, Ore., signed a letter of intent.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
PLNC took four of six singles matches in a 6-3 nonconference victory over UC San Diego. In the top two singles spots, Monica Clancy and Kelly Massa won, as did No. 4 and No. 6 Juliette Dimmett and Tiffany Puckett. The Crusaders (15-5) also won two of three doubles matches.
