BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : July Could Be a Month Full of Doubleheaders

The Dodgers, forced to postpone four games this week because of the unrest in Los Angeles, still aren’t sure when the games will be made up.

The worst-case scenario would have the Dodgers playing four doubleheaders in July.

Vice President Fred Claire said Saturday the decision will involve the league and the players’ association.

“We just can’t give the answers,” he said. “We don’t know the answers. You’re talking about whether they’re open dates or doubleheaders, or consecutive days of plays. Those are things that are out of our hands.”

The Dodgers have to make up one game with Philadelphia and three with the Montreal Expos. Both teams return to Los Angeles in July, but a series of doubleheaders in a short span might adversely affect a team.

“What can you do about it?” Manager Tom Lasorda said. “That’s the way it happened.”

Added catcher Mike Scioscia: “I don’t see any alternatives. It’s just an unfortunate circumstance.”

With five days off because of the postponements, the Dodgers will go to a four-man rotation to start an eight-game trip that will begin Tuesday night in Philadelphia. Lasorda said Kevin Gross will move to the bullpen for now. Tom Candiotti and Ramon Martinez are the scheduled starters for the two-game series against the Phillies. . . . Pitcher Rudy Seanez will be put on the 60-day disabled list Monday and then begin a rehabilitation program with the team’s double-A affiliate in San Antonio. Seanez has been sidelined all season because of back problems. . . . Reliever Jay Howell, who remains on the disabled list because of a sore throwing shoulder, will pitch today in Bakersfield and twice more this week, Tuesday and Wednesday. . . . Stan Javier, who left the team to attend to a personal matter, will rejoin the squad in Philadelphia.
