Nunn’s Spousal-Abuse Trial Postponed Until Next Week

The trial of middleweight boxer Michael Nunn, charged with punching his former fiancee, has been delayed until next week because the wife of his attorney gave birth Wednesday.

The trial in Malibu Municipal Court, scheduled to begin Friday, was rescheduled for May 15. Nunn is represented by attorney Donald Randolph of Los Angeles.

Nunn is charged with two misdemeanor counts of spousal abuse stemming from alleged attacks on Loretha Boyce, 26, on separate occasions last year. Prosecutors said Nunn first punched Boyce in August at his Agoura Hills home and, despite an ensuing restraining order prohibiting the 29-year-old boxer from harassing her, attacked her again Dec. 14 in Los Angeles.

Each charge carries a maximum six-month jail sentence.

Nunn was the International Boxing Federation champion for one year, losing the title last year when he was knocked out by James Toney in Nunn’s hometown of Davenport, Iowa.

Four players from The Master’s College baseball team were selected to the All-NAIA District 3 first team.

Dan O’Sullivan, a sophomore catcher, and Andy Martin, a junior infielder, were chosen for the second time. Tony MacCaughtry, a sophomore outfielder, and Mike Smith, a senior pitcher, also were selected. Junior infielder Joe Pence was an honorable-mention selection.

Krissy Carpenter, a former Hart High standout in softball, earned All-Big Eight Conference honors after helping Kansas (48-8) to a second-place finish behind No. 7 Oklahoma State.

Carpenter, a freshman, is batting .310 as the Jayhawks’ designated hitter.
