PREP ROUNDUP : Kobata Throws Third No-Hitter for Mater Dei

Terri Kobata pitched her third no-hitter of the season, striking out 19, as visiting Mater Dei defeated St. Joseph, 1-0, in an Angelus League softball game Wednesday.

Kobata (8-0) lost her perfect game with one out in the sixth inning, when she issued her only walk.

The Monarchs (15-1-1, 6-0) scored their only run in the second, with Jennifer Cline coming home on Candace Kollan’s groundout.

In Sea View League softball:

Woodbridge 8, Newport Harbor 1--Jessica Montgomery and Debbie Nasitka each had three hits and drove in two runs for the host Warriors (23-3, 7-0).

Stacy Washington (10-2) pitched three hitless innings for Woodbridge. Newport Harbor fell to 9-7, 3-4.

In South Coast League softball:

El Toro 7, Dana Hills 2--Jaime Smith was two for three, driving in two runs, and Sam Smithson scored three times to back Jodi Smith’s four-hitter for the host Chargers (18-8-1, 7-0).

Mission Viejo 14, Irvine 2--Brandi Beougher drove in four runs with a two-run homer in the third and a two-run single in the fifth for the visiting Diablos (7-13, 3-4).

In Sunset League softball:

Capistrano Valley 2, San Clemente 0--Jody Morris’ two-out, seventh-inning infield single drove in Daniela Hugelshofer, and Heather Still scored on an error for the visiting Cougars.

Huntington Beach 6, Westminster 2--Nikki Chavira had a two-run double in the first and Stefanie Noffsinger added an RBI double later in the inning for the visiting Oilers (9-11-1, 5-4).

In nonleague softball:

Liberty Christian 5, Brethren Christian 1--Jen Craven pitched a three-hitter for the host Minutemen (13-4). Windy Yeager’s sixth-inning, bases-loaded single drove in the go-ahead run for Liberty Christian.

In the Angelus League boys’ swimming league prelims:

Turk, Herlihy post top times--Don Turk of Mater Dei was the fastest qualifier in the 200 individual medley, and Brendon Herlihy of Santa Margarita swam the fastest 500 freestyle at Servite High. The finals will be held Friday.

In the Freeway League girls’ swimming prelims:

Pearce, Livingston have top times in two events--Sonora freshman Steffany Pearce was the top qualifier in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 16.31 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.18). Teammate Victoria Livingston had the top qualifying marks in the 50 freestyle (25.50) and 100 freestyle (56.33).

In the Pacific Coast League golf finals:

Grandy leads--Justin Grandy of Trabuco Hills fired a two-over-par 74, putting him one shot ahead of teammate Mark Mingnone after the first round at San Luis Rey Country Club.

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 12, Loara 6--Sharif Elbayoumy and Alex Valle swept their three doubles sets as the host Aztecs concluded their regular season 18-0, 10-0.

Cameron Lindee won all three of his singles sets, improving to 52-0 in dual-match play for Loara.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Savanna 11, Anaheim 7--Todd Merryman swept his three sets at No. 1 singles to lead Savanna (4-15, 2-7).

Valencia 9, Western 9 (Valencia wins on games, 71-65)--After losing all nine singles sets, the Tigers (16-2, 9-0) won all nine doubles sets, assuring themselves of the Orange League championship.
