A Ventura man was wounded outside a downtown Ventura hotel when a gunman fired four shots into his parked car, authorities said Monday.

The shooting took place about 7 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Vagabond Inn on Thompson Boulevard, where Robert Monteith, 31, was waiting for a friend, Ventura Police Officer James Beautrow said.

Monteith told police that two men drove through the lot in an older, light blue sedan before stopping in front of his car. The passenger, a man in his early 30s wearing a blue bandanna over long black hair, fired four shots from a small pistol through the windshield of Monteith’s car, Beautrow said.

One round struck Monteith, grazing his left shoulder. He did not require hospitalization, police said.

Monteith told the police that he did not recognize his assailants, and investigators do not believe that the attack was related to either gangs or drugs, Police Sgt. Larry Lotton said.
