Leagues Select Their Candidates for Athlete-of-the-Year Honors

Terry Mann of Sunny Hills High School and Ryan Roskelly of Valencia head the boys nominations, and Shelley Taylor of Edison and Jody Anton of Brea-Olinda head the girls nominations for the Orange County Athletic Directors’ Assn. athletes of the year.

Mann is a two-sport standout at Sunny Hills, where he led the Lancers’ basketball team to two consecutive Freeway League titles. As a track and field athlete, he has cleared 6-foot-11 in the high jump. Roskelly led Valencia’s football team to the Southern Section Division VI championship last fall.

Taylor is the national leader for the outdoor 1600-meter run in track and won the State Division II cross-country championship last fall. Anton led the Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball team to the State championship game four straight seasons, winning the title three times.

Nominees for the award must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and have earned all-league honors in at least one sport.

The winners will be announced next Wednesday at the athletic directors’ spring meeting at the Anaheim Stadium Club.

The Pacific Coast League has not submitted its nominees.

Angelus: Jennifer Cline (Mater Dei) and David Knuff (Mater Dei).

Century: Molly Schulman (El Modena) and Gavin Brown (El Modena).

Empire: Lupe Nava (Cypress) and Alex Medyn (Esperanza).

Freeway: Zrinka Kristich (La Habra) and Terry Mann (Sunny Hills).

Garden Grove: Natasha Kohne (Rancho Alamitos) and Jeremy Wilkinson (Santiago).

Orange: Jody Anton (Brea-Olinda) and Ryan Roskelly (Valencia).

Olympic: Kara Stephens (Orange Lutheran) and Chiron Hart (Brethren Christian).

Sea View: Maureen McLaren (Newport Harbor) and Justin McIntee (Newport Harbor).

South Coast: Jaime Smith (El Toro) and David Erikson (Dana Hills).

Sunset: Shelley Taylor (Edison) and Christian Moore (Westminster).
