New Mexico Eliminates Aztecs, 2-1

San Diego State lost a marathon game late Saturday night when New Mexico scored the winning run in the top of the 12th for a 2-1 victory during the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Honolulu.

San Diego State was eliminated, finishing with a 1-2 tournament record. Overall they were 39-18.

It was the second extra-inning game of the day for he Aztecs, who earlier lost to Hawaii, 1-0, in 10 innings.

The Aztecs scored first against New Mexico as Steve Dietz, Derek Vinyard and Greg Quam opened the bottom of the fourth with consecutive singles. Dietz scored on Quam’s single to right-center, but Vinyard was thrown out trying to score from first.

New Mexico tied it in the sixth. With one out, designated hitter David Gomez hit a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line that scored Mark Gulseth in from third. Gulseth opened the inning with a double down the left-field line.

After threatening in the eighth and ninth, New Mexico finally won it with two out in the 12th when Tommy Roe grounded a 2-2 pitch up the middle, scoring Antonio Fernandez from second.
