In drag boat racing at Castaic Lake, Jay Harroutunian of Fresno guided his Whiskey River top-fuel hydro to victory in the Mission Foods Nationals.

Harroutunian dominated the field with three successive quarter-mile passes at speeds in excess of 200 m.p.h. In the final, Harroutunian covered the course in 5.84 seconds at 201 m.p.h. to defeat Clinton Anderson of Alpine, who false-started. Harroutunian’s best effort came in his semifinal victory over Dave Promnitz, also of Fresno, when posted a 5.45-second mark at 212.77 m.p.h. Both marks were meet bests.
