OXNARD : City Renames Part of Colonia Road
The Oxnard City Council ignored the suggestions of a specially selected street-naming committee on Tuesday and chose a new name of its own for a section of Colonia Road--Camina de la Raza.
The committee had suggested that the name Camino del Sol be placed on the part of Colonia Road between Del Norte Boulevard and the fire station near Rose Avenue, and on a new section between the station and Oxnard Boulevard. The name was suggested because Del Sol Park is nearby, and to avoid confusion because the new section of road parallels part of the existing Colonia Road that will retain its old name.
But Councilman Manuel Lopez suggested that the section of road be named Camina de la Raza--Road of the People--to reflect the city’s Latino heritage. The council approved the change by a 5-0 vote.
