BETTER YEAR: San Juan Capistrano's Roberto Guerrero, above, has caused much of the excitement leading up to today's Indy 500 race when his 232-m.p.h. time trial won him the pole position. He's well aware that just 14 pole winners have wound up in the winner's circle in the previous 75 races. But that doesn't dampen his spirits; he's happy just to be there. In his last Indy 500 race, in 1987, an accident sent him into a 17-day coma and almost finished his career.
