Metro BRIEFS : LOS ANGELES : Freight Derailment Delays Amtrak

Five cars of a freight train en route to Los Angeles from New York City derailed near Union Station Tuesday, causing moderate damage and delaying several Amtrak trains due in and out of the city.
The Santa Fe Railway train, made up of five locomotives and 52 cars and staffed by two crew members, derailed at 7:40 a.m. at Mission Road Tower, said Amtrak spokesman Mike Martin. Martin said the 10th through 14th cars of the 4,700-foot-long, 3,500-ton train derailed west of the Los Angeles River.
Amtrak trains due in and out of Los Angeles were delayed “for at least an hour,” Martin said, primarily because the locomotives on the derailed train were stopped across track that the Amtrak trains normally use.
