Kevin Kiernan, who has coached boys’ and girls’ high school basketball teams in Orange County the last seven seasons, has been hired to coach the Cypress women’s team, the college announced Friday.

Kiernan’s most successful stint came as the girls’ coach at La Quinta High from 1985 to 1990. His teams won five Garden Grove League titles and a Southern Section title in the 1989-90 season. La Quinta’s record was 112-24 during that time.

Kiernan coached the Savanna boys’ team in 1990-91 and the La Quinta boys’ team last season.

Kiernan, 32, takes over a Cypress program that has struggled in recent seasons. The program was suspended because of lack of players at the midway point of the 1988-89 season. The team was restarted the next season by Bob Van Voorhis, who had a record of 8-74 before he resigned in March. Cypress went 6-21 last season.

Five Orange County softball players were picked to the All-State team, including three from Orange Coast.

Pitcher Alisha Nelson, first baseman Shannon Ebert and utility player Sam Lutsch played for the Pirates, who won the Orange Empire Conference title.

Infielder Carrie Frederick of Cypress and outfielder Wendy Clemens of Saddleback also made the All-State team.

Four local players made the All- Southern California team: pitcher Angie Guerrero (Fullerton), catcher Kim Fritts (Fullerton), infielder Kathy Shortall (Orange Coast) and outfielder Tina Trujillo (Rancho Santiago).

Curt Hanson has been selected as the interim head coach of the Orange Coast men’s volleyball team. He replaces Bob Wetzel, who quit this month.

Hanson, 35, has been Wetzel’s assistant for six seasons. After playing at Cal State Long Beach from 1975 to 1979, Hanson was an assistant at OCC in 1981-82, but the program was dropped.

The program was restarted in 1988, and Hanson returned in 1989.

Don Lent, who coached football at Cypress from 1974 until the program was dropped in 1978, has retired from the college after 17 years.

Lent has been a physical education teacher since 1978.

Mike Monday, a catcher at Orange Coast, has signed with the Angels. Monday, the son of former major leaguer Rick Monday, will report to the Angels’ rookie team in Mesa, Ariz., on June 8.
