Fullerton Victory Sets Stage for a Rematch : College World Series: Titans score five runs in the first inning to defeat Miami. Teams will play again Friday, with the winner advancing to the final.

Cal State Fullerton stayed alive in the College World Series by scoring five first-inning runs and hanging on to beat No. 1 Miami 7-5 on Wednesday.

The Titans (45-16) battered starter Jose Prado (4-2) for four hits and five runs in the first inning. Phil Nevin, the No. 1 overall pick in Monday’s major-league draft, hit a two-run homer in the second for a 7-0 lead as Fullerton broke a five-game winning streak for Miami (55-9).

The two teams meet again Friday for a berth in Saturday’s championship game. The Hurricanes must win to put retiring coach Ron Fraser in the title game for the third time. Fraser is ending a 30-year career at Miami, and won CWS titles in 1982 and 1985.

Jeremy Carr’s double and walks to Nevin and Jason Moler loaded the bases in the first inning and Tony Banks opened the scoring with an RBI single.

Steve Sisco’s single to left scored Nevin and Moler and Nate Rodriguez’s looping single to center scored Banks and Sisco for a 5-0 lead.

Nevin, the No. 1 pick of the Houston Astros, hit his 22nd homer of the year in the top of the second, a two-run shot to left field that made it 7-0.

Miami’s Kevin DiGiacomo hit his 11th homer of the season in the sixth off Dan Naulty (13-3) and Donald Robinson hit his fourth of the year in the seventh to make it 7-2.

Miami got three runs in the eighth to make it 7-5, but reliever James Popoff preserved the lead in the ninth for his first save of the year.

Fullerton is one of only eight teams in CWS history to win the title after a first-round loss, in 1979. The Titans also won in 1984.

The winner of Friday’s rematch meets either Texas (48-16) or Pepperdine (46-11-1), who meet Thursday, in the championship game. Miami has not lost two games in a row since February, when the Hurricanes dropped back-to-back games with Florida.
