Williams, Berry Star at TAC District Meet

Tim Williams of the San Diego Track Club and Mesa College student Kettrell Berry were among the outstanding performers at the San Diego-Imperial Counties TAC District Meet Saturday at Balboa Stadium.

Williams won the 200 meters with a mark of 21.04 seconds, while Berry, running unattached, turned a 46.84 in the 400.

Other outstanding marks were turned in by Jason Bender (unattached) in the javelin (226-10), Pete Thompson (unattached) in the discus (185-7) and Paul Quirke (Ireland) in the shot put (62-0 1/4).

GOLF

Madison’s Chris Riley, the San Diego Section champion, will try to become the 10th San Diego golfer to win the Southern California Golf Championship when that event is played Monday at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista. The championship round begins at 12:45 p.m.

Tiger Woods of Western High School in Anaheim is the defending champion.

Former San Diego titlists include USDHS’ Phil Mickelson (1987) and Manny Zerman (‘88), Poway High’s Lennie Clements (‘75) and La Jolla High’s Craig Stadler (‘71).

AWARDS

San Diego Mesa College named Amber Drake and Gabino Toledo its female and male athletes of the year.

Drake, a sophomore swimmer chosen the state’s Community College Female Swimmer of the Year, won two state titles, in the 50-yard freestyle in a state record 23.81 seconds (second-best nationally), and the 50 butterfly with a national-best 26.27. She took second in the 100 free but her 52.32 mark in the prelims was second in the nation. She is Mesa’s first two-time award winner. Named a National Community College All-American, she was ranked eighth nationally.

Toledo competed in cross-country and track. The freshman took first in the Pacific Coast Cross-Country Championships, fourth in the Southern California Regionals and third in the State Championship. He took third at state in the 10,000 meters and fifth in 5,000 meters.

BASEBALL

The county’s best 2-A players meet the best of the 3-A tonight at 6 p.m. at San Diego State. The game features some of the top seniors in the county competing in a nine-inning contest, including Brendan Hause from 3-A champion Mira Mesa and Manny Castillo and J.J. Ibarra from 2-A champion Mission Bay.

Among the area players who will participate who were recently drafted by major league teams are Rancho Buena Vista’s Travis Wilson (10th round, Milwaukee), Vista’s Aaron Rounsifer (11th, Boston), Castle Park’s Kiko Palacios (22nd, Cleveland), Grossmont’s Wynter Phoenix (37th, Detroit), Hause (37th, Oakland), and Fallbrook’s Steve Pack (49th, Mets).

SOFTBALL

The top players in the San Diego Section meet in the Hall of Champions Senior All-Star Game at 6 p.m. tonight at Helix High School.
