BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Righetti Returns to Starting

Dave Righetti, who has more saves than any left-handed reliever in baseball history, will return to being a starter Tuesday night after nine years in the bullpen.
After 522 consecutive relief appearances, Righetti was named by San Francisco Manager Roger Craig as the Giants’ starter against the Cincinnati Reds and Tom Browning.
“I’m going to have to remember all the things I used to do to prepare to start,” said Righetti, who approached Craig before the game Saturday about moving into the Giants’ starting rotation.
Righetti, who has saved 20 or more games eight years in a row, has struggled in a part-time closer role. Sharing the load with Jeff Brantley, Mike Jackson and Rob Beck, Righetti has been unable to stay sharp.
Righetti, who has 251 saves, is 1-3 with a 4.64 earned-run average in 21 appearances, winning Saturday for the first time since April 21, 1991. He last pitched as a starter in 1983 when he was 14-8 with a 3.44 ERA in 31 starts, including a 4-0 no-hitter over the Boston Red Sox on July 4.
