Wathan said Manager Buck Rodgers, who is recuperating at home from surgery to repair the injuries he suffered in the team’s May 21 bus accident, is in good spirits. “He’s always interested in how we’re doing,” Wathan said. “He’s a very positive man.” Wathan said he hasn’t been consulting Rodgers daily on the lineup because Rodgers feels removed from the team. “I take full responsibility for this,” Wathan said, laughing.

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
