ANTELOPE VALLEY : County Clears Way for School Bailout
Los Angeles County education officials have approved a financial recovery plan for the deficit-ridden Antelope Valley Union High School District, clearing the way for a county bailout loan to the district of up to $12 million, officials said Tuesday.
Officials in the 11,500-student district, which faces a budget deficit of more than $12 million for the current and coming school years, already have decided to lay off more than 100 employees, cut salaries by 7% and trim a variety of programs.
Janice Crawford, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, said county officials still are seeking more information from the district.
But if the district keeps to its promised cutbacks, it ought to be able to get the county loan it needs to remain solvent.
