The Philadelphia Eagles signed free agent running back Herschel Walker to a two-year contract Monday.

Walker was released this spring by the Minnesota Vikings, who got him from the Dallas Cowboys for five players and eight draft choices in 1989.

Minnesota cut Walker, 30, earlier this month rather than re-sign him for his 1991 salary of $1.7 million.

“I think the Eagles can get to the Super Bowl, and I want to be a part of it,” Walker said. “There were other teams interested, but I thought this is the team to do the job.”

Eagle Coach Rich Kotite said Walker’s signing and the return of quarterback Randall Cunningham’s should make the offense one of the league’s best. “I see him carrying the ball a lot,” he said of Walker. Walker also will be used to run back kickoffs, Kotite said.

Contract terms were not disclosed, but it is believed Walker will earn about $700,000, plus performance incentives.

Last season, Walker gained 825 yards in 198 carries and caught 33 passes for 204 yards.
