Riverside Man Held After Car Chase

A Riverside man was arrested late Tuesday after leading police on a car chase that began in Costa Mesa and ended after more than 100 miles when the suspect ran out of gas, authorities said.

Gary William Bogdanoff, 43, was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto, possession of stolen property and failure to yield after the nearly two-hour chase, which reached speeds of 85 m.p.h., the California Highway Patrol reported.

“We just keep with them until they run out of gas--unless it becomes a hazard,” said Sgt. Tom Joy of the CHP office in Ontario, whose officers joined the late-night pursuit shortly after it crossed into San Bernardino County.

The chase began about 9:15 p.m. along Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa after Officer Floyd Waldron checked the registration of a 1980 Toyota and found it was reported stolen in Riverside on May 18, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Sam Cordeiro.

Waldron tried to get the driver to pull over, but he drove north on the San Diego Freeway instead, Cordeiro said. The suspect exited at Euclid Street, but then got back on the southbound freeway, the CHP reported.

The driver went north on the Costa Mesa Freeway, east on the Riverside Freeway and then west along the San Bernardino Freeway into Baldwin Park. He exited the freeway again and turned around to get back on it before finally running out of gas on the freeway in Fontana, Joy said.

Bogdanoff was being held in West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $15,000 bail, authorities said.
