BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Few All-Stars on This Team

Share

For the first time since 1988, and the third time since the club moved to Los Angeles, the Dodgers could have only one representative--Darryl Strawberry--on the National League All-Star team on July 14 in San Diego.

Other than Strawberry, who is running third in fan voting for the three outfield spots, the Dodgers’ leading candidate is Tom Candiotti. Although he had a poor showing Tuesday in San Diego, Candiotti (6-6) ranks among league leaders with four complete games and two shutouts. He has a 3.19 earned-run average.

The other top candidate could be pitcher Orel Hershiser, who is 6-5 with a 3.29 ERA. He ranks among league leaders by holding opponents to a .216 average.

Because the Dodgers’ offense has struggled, a hitter probably will not be chosen. Mike Sharperson leads the team with a .333 average and 12 doubles, but he has only 160 plate appearances, 35 short of the 3.1 plate appearances per game that is required for a batting champion.

Eric Davis was asked where his steal of Tim Teufel’s apparent home run in San Diego Tuesday ranks among his all-time catches. “Eighth,” Davis said quickly. Davis is still most proud of the time he swiped two home runs from Jack Clark on consecutive days in St. Louis. “Jack was so mad, on his next at-bat he hit the ball so far nobody could catch it,” Davis said with a smile. “That’s the best part about this game, playing defense.”

After missing several weeks to allow his leg injury of last season to heal fully, Jeff Hamilton is displaying new power and a new attitude at triple-A Albuquerque. In 112 at-bats, he has 20 runs batted in, with three home runs and a .286 average. “Everything is starting to come around for him,” said Bill Russell, Albuquerque manager.
