SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : U.S. Olympians Play Cuba

What has been advertised as the greatest basketball team ever assembled will make its television debut on a weekend that will include Wimbledon tennis, and the U.S. Olympic track and field trials and boxing finals.

Basketball: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird will lead the United States against Cuba in the opening game of the Olympic qualifying Tournament of Americas Sunday at noon on NBC (Channels 4, 36 and 39). The United States will be without center Patrick Ewing, who dislocated his thumb in practice. The Cubans finished fourth in the Pan Am Games last year, losing twice to a U.S. team of college players.

* Tennis: Hannah Storm, formerly of CNN, makes her debut with NBC, broadcasting feature reports during the network’s Wimbledon coverage, which begins today at 9 a.m. A recap of the first week of action will air at the same time Sunday.

* Olympic Trials: The U.S. track and field trials and boxing finals will air live today at noon on NBC. On Sunday, the boxing finals, or box-offs, will be carried live at 2 p.m., and the conclusion of the track and field trials will be broadcast delayed at 7 p.m.

* Baseball: The Angels will play on KTLA Channel 5 tonight at 7 and Sunday at 1:30 p.m., against the Seattle Mariners. The Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves, two teams competing for the lead in the NL West, will play today at 10 a.m., on CBS (Channels 2 and 8), and Sunday at 11:15 a.m. on TBS. The Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees will get together for ESPN’s Sunday night game at 5.

* Golf: CBS also has this week’s PGA event, the $1-million Buick Tournament, today at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at noon. * Other Sports: ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” (today at 4:30 p.m., Channels 7, 3 and 42, 3:30 p.m. Channel 10) will feature horse racing’s Hollywood Gold Cup.
