Jones Advances in 200 at Trials

Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks High advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s 200 meters in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in New Orleans on Friday, but Darcy Arreola of Nike Coast and Canoga Park was eliminated in the semifinals of the women’s 1,500.

Jones timed 23.00 seconds to place second in her heat behind Dannette Young of the Reebok Racing Club, who clocked 22.99.

Jones, who placed fourth in the 200 at The Athletics Congress championships last year, will run in a quarterfinal at 3:05 p.m. CDT today, and if she advances, in a semifinal at 4:10.

Arreola, the 1991 NCAA Division I champion for Cal State Northridge, placed eighth in the second semifinal of the 1,500 with a time of 4 minutes 17.86 seconds.

Regina Jacobs, a 1981 graduate of the Argyll Academy (now Campbell Hall High), won the first semifinal in 4:17.10, competing unattached.
