All-Pro safety Joey Browner failed to pass his physical because of a shoulder injury and was cut by the Minnesota Vikings.

The 32-year-old Browner, who was to be paid about $1 million this year under a non-guaranteed contract, followed Herschel Walker, Keith Millard and Wade Wilson as highly paid veterans to leave the Vikings since the end of last season.

A first-round draft choice out of USC, Browner played in six consecutive Pro Bowls and made the All-Pro team three times.

“He cannot play football for the Minnesota Vikings,” said first-year Coach Dennis Green, who denied that there were any other factors involved.

Phil Simms settled the New York Giants’ quarterback controversy by saying he has accepted his job as backup quarterback to Jeff Hostetler and that he wants to end his career playing for the Giants.

Giant Coach Ray Handley raised trade speculation in the past week by saying that the Giants might be willing to trade one of their five quarterbacks.

“I’m not going to go anywhere this year,” Simms said. “I’m not going to be traded anywhere, so let’s end it right here.”

Simms, who will turn 37 in November, signed a contract for a reported $1.6 million Tuesday.
