PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Quarterbacks Split Time

Share

Coach Art Shell said he has not decided how much quarterbacks Jay Schroeder, Todd Marinovich and Vince Evans will play in the Raiders’ exhibition opener against the 49ers in San Francisco on Aug 8. However, Marinovich is likely to receive more playing time than he did as a rookie, when he played in one exhibition game.

“It may be along the line of halves,” Shell said. “I’d like to get Todd as much playing time as possible, but at the same time, I want to make sure Jay gets his fair share of playing time because he needs to be sharp.

“They’re doing a (good) job competing out there and getting better as camp goes along. And that kind of competition can only benefit our team, because down the road, you never know where a quarterback is going down.”

The Raiders signed linebacker Greg Gilbert. Originally drafted by the Chicago Bears, Gilbert has also trained with the Indianapolis Colts, as well as with the Raiders.

Tight end Greg Harrell was waived to make room for Gilbert.

The Raiders will leave four injured players behind when they depart today for a three-day practice against the Phoenix Cardinals in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Safety Bernard Ellison (knee), cornerback Sam Seale (hamstring), fullback Brent Fullwood (knee) and guard James FitzPatrick (knee) will continue to undergo treatment for their injuries.

The Raiders will resume drills at Oxnard on Monday.
