LOS ANGELES : Lifeguard Team Wins 4th National Championship

Los Angeles County’s ocean lifeguard team captured its fourth consecutive National All-Women Championship, it was announced Thursday.

The competition took place Wednesday at Riis Beach in New York’s Gateway National Recreation Area. The Los Angeles team won six of eight events, beating out 17 teams from around the country.

The Department of Beaches’ six-woman team amassed 136 points in the competition. Their closest competitor, Cape Cod, Mass., got 45.

Lisa Dial of Venice was named Most Valuable Competitor after helping her team in three of its victories.

Dial won the Ironwoman contest: a beach run, followed by a 450-yard ocean swim and a 600-yard paddle on a rescue board. She also was a member of the squads that won the surf rescue and swim-run relay. Diane Graner of Manhattan Beach won the run-swim-run event and Shari Latta of Malibu won the surf ski and run-paddle-run events.
