Players With Moorpark Ties to Face Test in Canada

Lac la Biche in Alberta, Canada, will be a temporary home away from home for several past and present players from the Moorpark College baseball team when they participate in the Pow Wow International baseball tournament today through Monday.

The players also will run two baseball camps during their stay in Canada to help pay for travel costs.

The team includes catcher Marcus Lockwood, infielder Darin Furlong and outfielder Don Smith from the 1990 Western State Conference championship team.

Other members who have played for Moorpark include Jason Mitchell, Darren Lloyd, Danny Haas, Brad Taylor, Brian Vasey, Rich Naranjo, Dave Demaio and Daryl Hernandez. Jason Isaccs from Ventura College and Anthony Paschia from Valley also will participate.

Reseda High is offering physical examinations for high school athletes on Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to noon in the South Gym.

The exams are available to students attending any Los Angeles Unified School District school, private or parochial school.

The four-day Vaquero volleyball camp at Hoover High in Glendale will begin Aug. 10 with daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A separate session only for setters will be held Aug. 15. Registration is Aug. 10 at 8 a.m. at the school.

The Corinthian Classic Yacht Race, which will include 40 sailboats from Morro Bay to San Diego, will be held at Channel Islands Harbor on Aug. 8.

The living history fleet, all designed before 1952, will start the race outside the Channel Islands Harbor breakwater at noon.

Sloops, cutters, ketches, yawls and schooners will compete for awards in elapsed time, oldest boat, smallest boat, farthest port and turtle trophy.

The Southern California Stealth, an area-based girls’ softball team for players 16 and under, has been invited to participate in the fourth Friendship tournament in Vista, Calif., Aug. 14-16.

The tournament features teams from Japan and Australia as well as the United States.
