The Rams’ coaching staff will get a good opportunity to evaluate the team today in a scrimmage against the Chargers at UC San Diego.

“I’m going to see how we fare . . . their first team versus our first team,” Ram Coach Chuck Knox said. “We’ll see how far we’ve come as far as the system is concerned.

“We’re looking to see how some of our younger players will play, see if they can go another step forward from our last scrimmage versus their rookies.”

Some of the Rams’ veterans, notably cornerbacks Todd Lyght and Darryl Henley, will not play. But most, including quarterback Jim Everett, will get in a good chunk of action.

“We’re a little shy in some spots,” Knox said, “but we’ll get some thoughts on some people, see where we are.”

Knox eased up on the players during their second practice Friday, and he is hopeful that will help the Rams recover enough to put forth a better effort today.

“We’re a little nicked and we’ve been going pretty hard,” Knox said. “I just felt we ought to ease off a little bit.”

The Rams, who still are missing unsigned rookie cornerback Steve Israel and unsigned safety Michael Stewart, will get most of Sunday off. They will return to camp for an evening meeting and resume two-a-days on Monday.
