Scott Goodyear, who came within six feet of being a surprise winner of the Indianapolis 500--losing to Al Unser Jr. in the closest finish in Indy history--raced to his first Indy-car victory in the Marlboro 500 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.
Goodyear won an all-Canadian late-race run with Paul Tracy, taking the lead for good with 19 laps to go on a spectacular restart after the fifth and final caution flag of the race.
A crash by Scott Brayton caused the yellow flag that put Goodyear in position to move in front on the restart. Goodyear went on to a 5.932-second victory, averaging 177.625 m.p.h.
