OXNARD : Cost Sharing Approved for Ventura Freeway Bridge Project

Share

The Oxnard City Council agreed Tuesday to chip in its share of the cost for widening the Ventura Freeway bridge over the Santa Clara River, between Vineyard Avenue and Johnson Drive.

The Ventura City Council approved the cost-sharing plan Monday, paving the way for the construction project scheduled to start in 1997. If all goes smoothly, the work should be completed the following year.

The state Department of Transportation has agreed to pay half of the estimated $60-million to $80-million cost for widening the bridge and improving freeway on- and off-ramps.

The other half would be paid by Oxnard and Ventura, with Oxnard paying the bulk of the cost because that is where the majority of the work will be done.

The two cities have tried for several years to reach agreement on who should pay for the needed bridge work.
