A San Diego man was shot to death by a policeman Tuesday after he stabbed the officer with a kitchen knife.

Hussien Roba, also known as Jilo Galgalo, 33, was struck three times in the chest by shots fired from Officer David T. Walker’s service revolver. Roba was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he died several hours later, said George Dickason, county medical examiner’s investigator.

The incident began as an argument between Roba and his boarding house landlord, said homicide Lt. Barbara Harrison. As the argument became more heated, residents in the 2800 block of 30th Street called police to report the disturbance, Harrison said. It was the second police call involving the same landlord and tenant in less than four hours, Harrison said.

Police arrived in the neighborhood just east of Balboa Park about 12:30 p.m. and were searching the grounds around the boarding house, police said. Roba suddenly appeared from around a corner and rushed officer Walker.

Walker was stabbed in the back and shoulder and taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was treated for the wounds. The weapon was described as a large kitchen knife about 8 inches long.

Walker was reported in good condition Tuesday night, said Tom Banaszak, spokesman for UCSD Medical Center.
